The Old Fisherman, Marti’s Grandad

One of the last Moken to be living on his Kabang throughout the year. In the monsoon season, he anchors his boat just offshore.

Identity: “We are part of the ocean; she is always there, in us and around us.”

About Marti (Sky): “Do not forget your forefathers, Sky. Do not lose the ancient wisdom or it will sink beneath the waves and you will become less than yourself, like a sponge without water. We were made to be free. You can’t hear the birds sing if you are shut inside man’s dark buildings or feel the touch of the rain on your face; but when rain falls on the ocean, it dances like shoals of fish bubbling just under the surface.”

Beliefs: “The spirits will protect me. The waves are calling and the stars shine. I cannot sleep without hearing the sound of the ocean. I cannot live without the sky above me and the breath of the salty air.”
